Warming Turmeric Tea

Ah Turmeric, this root that is a powerhouse of healing properties and comes from the same family as ginger. With a chill still in the air I love to make one of my favourite warming beverages turmeric tea or golden milk as it is sometimes called. Let's see, according to research turmeric contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-cholesterol, detoxing, pain relief and wound healing properties to name but a few although there are many more. 

This Turmeric tea recipe brings together some added elements to enhance some of the healing properties of the tea. For example; adding black pepper to the tea allows the release of curcumin which is the active property of turmeric making it more readily available in our body for absorption and healing. Ginger is also added for warmth and healing as is star anise and cinnamon.

 

INGREDIENTS

1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (or coconut milk)

1 teaspoon coconut oil

1/2 tsp ground turmeric

1/2 tsp ground ginger or 1 inch of fresh ginger

1 cinnamon stick or 1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground black pepper or 5 peppercorns

5 cardamom pods

1 star anise

Maple syrup or coconut nectar/sugar to taste

 

METHOD

Add the almond milk to a saucepan and warm gently

Add all the powdered ingredients and spices 

Add in the coconut oil and allow to simmer slightly

Once warmed up remove from heat source and strain into a cup / mug

Add maple syrup / coconut nectar to taste

Garnish with star anise, drink up and keep warm!
